How big can you print an AI image?

An image from ChatGPT looks sharp on your phone, but how big can you print it before it gets blurry? It depends on two things: how many pixels it has, and how close you'll stand to it.

The short answer

  • An image straight from ChatGPT (1024 x 1536 pixels) prints razor-sharp up to about 9 x 13 cm, and looks good up to about 17 x 26 cm.
  • With AI upscaling (doubling the pixels), the same image looks good on an A2 poster (42 x 59.4 cm) from a normal viewing distance.
  • For A1 and A0 you need an image created at a larger size, or a good photo from a camera or recent phone.

Not sure about your own image? The print size checker tells you in a second, right in your browser.

Pixels per inch: the rule

Printers talk about ppi: pixels per inch (2.54 cm). Two numbers matter:

  • 300 ppi for things you hold in your hand or look at up close: cards, A4 prints, photo books.
  • 150 ppi for posters and canvas you look at from a metre or more. From that distance your eye can’t see the difference. For really big prints, seen from a few metres, 120 ppi still looks good.

So a poster 42 cm (16.5 inches) wide needs about 16.5 x 150 = 2,480 pixels across to look sharp from a normal distance.

What AI tools give you

Most image generators give you 1 to 4 megapixels. ChatGPT gives 1024 x 1024 (square), 1536 x 1024 (landscape) or 1024 x 1536 (portrait). That’s plenty for a screen, but on paper it’s small.

Two tips:

  1. Download the original file. A screenshot or an image saved from a chat app is often smaller and compressed.
  2. Don’t crop it first. Every crop throws pixels away. Let the print shop fit it to the size.

What upscaling can and can’t do

Upscaling makes an image bigger by adding pixels; doubling the width and height gives four times as many. Simply stretching it (what most programs do) only makes it bigger, not sharper. An AI upscaler looks at the image and adds detail that fits: sharper edges, fur, leaves, texture. For drawings and AI art that works very well, and doubling the size is safe.

It has limits. An AI upscaler can’t recover detail that was never there, and for photos of people it should be careful not to change faces. That’s why we use a careful setting for photos.

How we do it

When you order with us, we:

  • check your image against the size you choose, before anything else;
  • upscale it with an AI upscaler where it helps, in tiles, so even big images stay sharp;
  • show you the result as a print proof, on the product;
  • tell you honestly when a size is too big, and suggest the sizes your image can handle.

When we design something for you for a big poster or canvas, we make it at 2048 x 3072 pixels instead of 1024 x 1536, so after upscaling it looks good up to A0 from a normal viewing distance.
