Why AI images look blurry in print

You made something beautiful in ChatGPT or Midjourney, had it printed, and it came back soft. That's not your eyes and usually not the printer. It's the pixels.

A screen hides it, paper doesn’t

Your phone shows about 400 to 500 pixels per inch on a tiny surface. A 1024 x 1536 image fills that screen with room to spare, so it looks crisp. Print the same image on an A2 poster and each pixel suddenly covers a patch of almost half a millimetre. From up close, edges get soft and fine detail turns into mush.

The three usual causes

1. Too few pixels for the size. The most common reason. An AI image of 1024 x 1536 pixels has enough for about 9 x 13 cm at full print quality. Everything beyond that is stretching. See how big you can print an AI image for a table per size.

2. A compressed copy. Screenshots, images saved from a chat app or sent through a messaging app are often smaller and saved as heavily compressed JPEG. That adds blocky edges and smudges that get bigger in print.

3. Plain stretching. Most programs and many print shops simply stretch a small image to the size you ordered. The image gets bigger, but not sharper: no new detail appears.

What actually helps

  • Start from the original file, in the largest size your AI tool offers.
  • Choose a size that fits the image, or let someone check it for you. Our print size checker does it in your browser.
  • Use an AI upscaler instead of stretching. An AI upscaler adds detail that fits the image, so edges stay clean and textures stay crisp. For AI art and drawings, doubling the size works very well.
  • Look at a proof before you pay. A proof shows the file that goes to the printer, not just a pretty preview.

What we do before we print

Every image that comes to us gets the same treatment:

  1. We measure it against the size you chose.
  2. Where it helps, we upscale it with an AI upscaler. Big images are upscaled in tiles that are stitched back together without a visible seam.
  3. You get a print proof, on the product, before you pay.
  4. If your image still isn’t good enough for a size, we say so and suggest sizes that are.

For photos of people we use a careful upscaler setting, so faces and glasses stay as they were.
